1983年から40年
今年2023年は1983年から40年目。
いつも史料確認に使っているRateYourMusic.comで ”1983年リリースのアルバムでユーザ評価が高いもの” トップ100を抜き出してみた。
40年前のポップカルチャーを音楽からの視点で捉えるとどのような様子だったが分かるだろう。
1983年のトップ100のリストは次のとおり。リリース年月日は本国でのものである。
1983年というと、一般的にはジャーニーやらカンサスやらスティックスなどアメリカの産業ロック隆盛で、心ある人は苦々しい思いで見ていたと思う。ところが実はどっこいなトップ100である。
スポンサーリンク1位はトム・ウェイツの「ソードフィッシュトロンボーン」。ブルースをベースにまるでキャプテン・ビーフハートな音楽。今になれば1位でも全然違和感がないのが凄い。
5位のCharly Garcíaは軍事独裁政権下のアルゼンチンで活動していたアーティスト。
その他トップ10にはカメレオンズ、トーキング・ヘッズ、R.E.M.、ニュー・オーダー、ヴァイオレント・ファムズ、ブライン・イーノといったパンク、ポスト・パンク、New Waveとマーシフル・フェイト、ディオといったヘビメタ、NWOBHM(New Wave of British Heavy Metal)なアルバムが並ぶ。
以下ずっとNWとヘビメタが並び、時々AORにピーター・ガブリエルのWOMADで盛り上がっていた第三世界のという具合。産業ロックはまったく無視されたリストになっているのが面白いし、当時苦々しく思っていた人たちもこれで溜飲が下がるだろう。
思えばこの当時から同じロックでも、伝統芸としてのヘビメタと知的な表現としてのロック・NWへと分断されていったのだな。50位のチャーリー・ヘイデン「戦死者たちのバラッド」が後者と通底するものがあるように、ジャズもJBウルマーのようにNW系ロックに思い切り接近してくるようになっている。
あと昨今のシティ・ポップの盛り上がりを受け、この50位の比較的上位に杏里とYMOの「浮気なぼくら」がランクインしている。

また森山威男、マライアといった日本人もランクインしている。なお96位の「X」というのはロサンゼルス出身のアメリカのパンクオリジネーターXの方。Xも知らずにバンドを組んだ某×ではない。
